It’s January, and I’m Sitting in Costa Rica.

Back in the United States there’s snow and cold temps, but here I’m sitting in shorts, and looking out my window at a pristine swimming pool and an azure blue sky.

No, I’m not on business. I came because I wanted toA friend of mine was headed to Costa Rica, and because I’ve been to Costa Rica before and speak *pretty* decent Spanish, he invited me to come if I could make it.

Um… an excuse to meet up with a friend and get a little sun in the middle of January? I’m there!

And this isn’t an isolated experience either. Over the last several years, I’ve found myself in countries and situations like this dozens of times.

In 2017, I moved to Panama for a year, and lived on the beach of a remote fishing village. I spent my days exploring the coastline of the Azuero peninsula, surfing, swimming and learning Spanish with my wife and 2 kids.

In 2018, I spent 3 months living in Barcelona, Spain, followed by a month in Croatia.

I’ve taken 3 cross-country road trips (including 1 across Canada), done an ancestral visit to the Italian Alps, and spent shorter stints of time in 15 other countries. Brazil. Lithuania. Guatemala. Bosnia. El Salvador. Even the semi-forbidden Cuba (spoiler: Havana was a lot less enchanted and more beat-up than I was hoping it would be).

And The Best Part About All This Is That I’m Not Taking A Single Day Off Work.

Nope, thanks to remote work opportunities through sites like Upwork, I’ve been able to keep the money rolling in, even while I’m scampering across the globe.

But it wasn’t always this way for me.

I started off working like most people do–punching the clock and sitting in a cubicle. I wasn’t a terrible employee, but I’d be lying if I said my heart was ever fully in it.

Nope, my heart was in the next tab over, on Google maps or an article of Tim Ferriss talking about traveling and remote work.

Enter Upwork.

Somewhere along the way, I eventually stumbled upon the freelancer megahub Upwork, and was filled with the hope of generating job-replacing income.

But there was a major problem. Although I created a profile and submitted lots of proposals on jobs, nobody would hire me.

It wasn’t that I didn’t have the skills or was putting in half-hearted pitches either. It was that I didn’t have any job history or earnings on Upwork. And virtually every job posting required that the applicants have 1 or both of those.

Yep, what I found out after beating my head against the wall for some time was that the Upwork algorithm wouldn’t even show my proposal on the same screen as all the other bids. The person posting the job would actually have to click on an option that said something like “see more proposals from freelancers that don’t meet your criteria.”

If they did click that, it would toggle down an accordion box with a few other proposals in there from myself and other freelancers like me.

But what job poster in their right mind would ever click that button?

if you were trying to hire a freelancer to do a job for you, and you got bids from 6, 8, 10, or even 30 qualified freelancers, why would you ever waste your time trying to look through a bunch more unqualified freelancers?

I don’t know either.

So I had a major problem. I couldn’t get hired on Upwork unless I had experience on Upwork, and I couldn’t get experience on Upwork unless I got hired on Upwork.

Catch 22. I tried again and again, but never could get past this.

This, my friends, is the Upwork “sandbox.”

After I figured out the 2 hacks to get going on Upwork, my job experience cranked up in a hurry!

Then One Day…

I stumbled across something simple that changed it all for me. It allowed me to go from being completely invisible to job-posters, to actually getting a personal invitation from somebody who said they came across my profile as an Upwork “recommended provider.”

And all this, In just a couple of short weeks.

I completed the job for him, got a good review, and was off to the races.

And It Gets Even Better.

After just the first few jobs on Upwork, I actually discovered another really solid hack that has helped me convert proposals into jobs.

While some freelancers will tell you sob stories about all the proposals they submit that don’t yield fruit, I’ve been able to seriously up my conversion ratio on the proposals I put in.

In fact, I haven’t solicited any new work in a long time, and get several personal invitations from potential clients to apply to their job (most of which I decline).

Since I crossed that first initial hump, I’ve always been able to have my proposals seen, and get jobs on Upwork.

The Effects Have Been Monumental for Me.

The Effects Have Been Monumental for Me.

As I mentioned earlier, Upwork has allowed me to travel the world, while still generating a full-time income. It’s allowed me the time to get in shape, homeschool my little girl, build a couple of profitable side ventures, and basically live like most people can’t until they’re retired.

It’s given me the lifestyle that I used to read about when I was sitting in the cubicle.

….maybe the very same way you’re doing it now. 😉

And it’s not like I’m some kind of genius either. I’m not the smartest person on the planet. I definitely don’t work as hard as I could. I’m not even the most knowledgeable Upwork guru in the game. There are other people that have blogs or roll out major courses that teach you everything about everything on Upwork (usually costing several hundred dollars).

That’s not me.

I’ve just figured out 2 really important components of how to get initial traction so you can start making money on Upwork.

It’s Your Journey Too.

If you’re reading through this, there’s a good chance that we’re cut from the same cloth.

I’m here to help–here’s what I have for you:

I put together a brief, 5-video series that will teach you 2 very powerful secrets to help you quickly land your first jobs on Upwork. It costs $17.95, and will take you less than an hour to go through (I told you it wasn’t a course of everything about everything!).

It’s called Escaping The Upwork Sandbox.
